  7.     Crunch Time! It's Saturday night.
  8. I had promised a script for the Easter
  9. Pageant plus music for a song for our
  10. Sunday School the next morning.
  11. There's nothing like last minutes to
  12. get things done!
  13.  
  14.     We wasted precious time hunting
  15. the Web for a recording of the song we
  16. wanted to use. No dice, not even after
  17. downloading WalMart's music search-
  18. and-download software (plus Windows
  19. Media Player 9.0). The music just
  20. wasn't there.
  21.  
  22.     Time to punt. I hunted down
  23. SONGSMITH, LOADSTAR's easy to use SID
  24. music writer. I could have used
  25. QuickSMITH, by Lee Novak, but I wanted
  26. to monkey with the files. (More on
  27. this later in the tale.) Though I had
  28. never used SONGSMITH before, the
  29. program is almost intuitive. In a
  30. matter of 45 minutes, I had a fair
  31. three-voice arrangement playing.

  33.     I was using VICE, and one of its
  34. great features is Sound Capture. Just
  35. turn it on, choose a filename, play
  36. the music, and turn the capture off.
  37. There on my harddrive was a decent WAV
  38. file of the music. I used my CD burner
  39. software to make a music CD. Done!
  40.  
  41.     While I was doing all that, Sheri
  42. was looking through the Web for
  43. suitable scripts, skits, and readings
  44. for a Palm Sunday/Easter Reader's
  45. Theatre production. I edited together
  46. the stuff and had the master script
  47. finished by 3 AM. Like I said, there's
  48. nothing like last minutes....

  50.     Sunday evening (after a good nap
  51. that afternoon), I found SIDSMITH -- a
  52. great little program by Debbie Cruz
  53. and Jeff Jones that converts SONGSMITH
  54. files into SIDPlayer MUS files. Once I
  55. got it going, my little song was an
  56. honest-to-goodness SIDSong in a
  57. matter of seconds. But I didn't stop
  58. there.

  60.     Years ago, I heard about another
  61. LOADSTAR program -- MIDI PLAYER 64 by
  62. John Serafino. This neat piece of
  63. software takes a SIDSong and plays it
  64. out a MIDI interface. I dug around in
  65. the garage and found my interface and
  66. a little Casio MT-240 keyboard, which
  67. does a marvelous job of playing MIDI
  68. -- even with just 20 preset
  69. instruments, three channels, and
  70. limited polyphonics.

  72.     I then cut a 1581 (using 1581Copy
  73. on the PC) to take every- thing over
  74. to my REAL C-64, plugged in the MIDI,
  75. and tried out MIDI PLAYER for the
  76. first time. MP generates 6 voices --
  77. for stereo SIDSongs. For mono,
  78. three-voice SIDSongs, MIDI PLAYER
  79. repeats the voices. You can assign
  80. each voice to any MIDI channel -- and
  81. set features such as instrument,
  82. velocity, volume, and octave. My
  83. little keyboard doesn't do velocity
  84. (how hard you press the key) or MIDI
  85. volume. But the results were
  86. outstanding anyway!

  88.     Monday evening, I decided to go
  89. one step further. I used SONGSMITH to
  90. rework my original song for a stereo
  91. track (the STR files one sees for
  92. Stereo SID). This is a lot clumbsier
  93. than using my own PRESTO music
  94. processor, which has six SID voices
  95. built in. The trick with SONGSMITH is
  96. to load the first file, then monkey
  97. with the notes to add the three extra
  98. voices. The results can then be
  99. converted to SIDPlayer format, and
  100. played by MIDI PLAYER.

  102.     My GOODNESS! I was amazed at the
  103. sound coming from my little keyboard!
  104. This is sweet!

  106.     SONGSMITH has its limitations --
  107. no triplets or tying across measures
  108. -- and it is not quite as easy to use
  109. as QuickSMITH. But it is not
  110. completely hopeless. It is fast, and
  111. the resulting data can be massaged
  112. into the format most used on the C-64.
  113.  
  114.     So that's the story. And here are
  115. the three programs I used, plus one
  116. other -- SMITHSID by Doreen Horne.
  117. This program takes a SIDSong and turns
  118. it into a SONGSMITH file. It is far
  119. from perfect -- again because
  120. SONGSMITH does not have all the
  121. features of SIDPlayer. But with it,
  122. the essential notes are present for
  123. editing. The result can be returned to
  124. SIDPlayer format.

  126.     I don't have Craig Chamberlain's
  127. SIDPlayer software, so I can't go in
  128. and mess with the SIDSong file. But I
  129. really don't have time for that. These
  130. four programs do most of what I need.
  131. And they are LOADSTAR programs. That
  132. means they have LOADSTAR quality and
  133. [documentation]. Everything I needed
  134. to get up and running was right there
  135. on the disk with the software.

  137.     So I know you will be hearing more
  138. music from Dave Moorman. I have
  139. several compositions that should be
  140. put in SIDPlayer format. And when I
  141. need a quick tune for any reason, I
  142. know where I can get it!
